In rural Zambia there is little piped water.
People often walk for miles to collect water, usually to uncapped polluted wells.

Antiquated and dilapidated facilities and equipment

The wards at Lubwe hospital are hot and crowded. Since our first visit the supply of drugs to the hospital has improved but remain barely adequate. The drugs are given at the dispensary,
a rough extension to the pharmacy.

The image below, from the neo-natal room shows a typical incubator made of wood. It is heated by a light bulb with a bowl of water underneath. Since our second visit, we have been able to purchase four new incubators from KanMed, two for Lubwe hospital and two for Kasaba Hospital.

The equipment available was
very basic.
